Janice and Adam's possibility portrait

See www.innervisionportraits.com for more.

Egg tempera and embossed gold leaf on wood panel.

Janice and Adam are grandmother and grandson. What their special relationship provides for them both is adventure, spontaneity, closeness, generosity, and unconditional love.

The overall design of the portrait is based loosely on Buddhist art; Janice is a Buddhist and shares Buddhist teachings with Adam.

The top panel portrays Adventure with a huge rollercoaster and Janice and Adam bungee jumping tied together like a sandwich, as Adam recalls.

The right-hand panel shows their mutual Generosity as two hands offering a glowing bowl of big red cherries.

The bottom panel expresses their playful Spontaneity with a scene of Adam and Janice playing in the rain while everyone else hurries by under dark umbrellas.

The left panel shows Closeness with Janice and Adam, as a little boy, having long cozy conversations under a blanket tent in the living room.

The central portrait is surrounded by embossed gold leaf. The embossing shows the fiery halos or auras of realized souls in Buddhist art. The relationship between Janice and Adam calls them both to be adventurous, close, spontaneous, generous, and loving, and whenever they are fully present with each other, these possibilities are realized: life shows up as being full of adventure, spontaneity, closeness, generosity, and unconditional love. That is who they are together.

Gold recalls the words Janice uses to describes their relationship it is a treasure. Red is the color of love and energy, and a red band with the words Unconditional love surrounds and holds the central portrait. Around this is a ring of lotus petals on a blue band, symbolizing peace and enlightenment. The deep plum colors of the lacquered background combine the energy and intensity of red with the serenity and spirituality of blue; this color is associated with liveliness, imagination, excitement, and readiness to undertake new projects, voice opinions, and/or move out into the world.

What a beautiful piece of art. I love the symbols you've chose for each aspect of the relationship. May their relationship continue to grow and change. I'm an admin for a group called Pronoia, and we'd love to have this added to the group! Let's show the world that good doesn't have to be boring!

Thanks AlysssyIA! I love your "pronoia" attitude to life and appreciate hearing from you. Actually I didn't chose the symbols; my clients Janice and Adam did, in the amazing conversation we had before I painted them. I always interview my "possibility portrait" clients before painting them; we explore who they are at their best, what strengths or gifts they've gotten from their struggles, and why they're here (or if they're couples or families, what what they provide for each other.) Check out my website www.innervisionportraits.com for more. I'm excited that my work is being featured in a major book and DVD movie this fall, "Vision Boards: Unlocking the Secret to an Extraordinary Life"
