Kulkowitz-Hendl family
See www.innervisionportraits.com for more.
The divided oval shape of the central portrait is a reminder of the unity and wholeness of this family, despite apparent divisions. The shape of the painting is a compromise: Sigrid wanted round, Shaul wanted rectangle. It demonstrates that compromise can work well and even be beautiful…
The words around the outside of the portrait are reminders of what matters most to them as a family: open-hearted communication; fun and lightness; kindness; and perseverance. When things are not going as well as they could, any one of them can put these back into their joint experience and restore the sense that all is well.
In the center is the whole family in Key West being light, open-hearted, and kind to one another. This is how they love to be together – whenever they are light, kind, and in open-hearted communication, they get to be fully themselves and have fun together. They persevere as a family because this is what matters to them.
Above the family portrait the five of them are doing what you love to do, playfully arranged like the “Ascent of Man”: Misha sitting (just being); Shaul doing yoga; Nadav playing guitar; Kalil painting; and Sigrid leading the way, with the fluorescent light bulb of environmental consciousness. This image is a reminder to have fun and not take themselves too seriously!
Below is the Grand Canyon, a place they all felt connected to each other and to what matters most. They got to be spontaneous, adventurous, and relaxed together – and they can have that experience anywhere.
The bottom right has a lit menorah, symbol of their Jewish heritage as well as their perseverance and trust in one another. The bottom left shows open books illuminated by a fluorescent bulb, representing their love of learning and ideas.
Upper left are Shaul and Nadav mountain biking together beside the Ithaca Falls, a vivid reminder of perseverance and fun. It is also an image of family roles reversing as the boys grow up, as Nadav becomes Shaul’s teacher on their rides. In the upper right are Sigrid and Kalil dancing together, a shared experience of lightness, fun, and kindness. The whole family loves being outdoors together in the beauty of nature.
The arch of the starry night sky over all was Kalil’s idea, and the Buddhist prayer above it Sigrid’s — they are all here together, and they are truly blessed.
